Throughout 2024, we have seen a real shift in the way clients approach aesthetic treatments. We have seen them move from cosmetic treatments to have a real focus on skincare. Skincare reigns supreme, whether it’s through the glass skin trend or the rise of the clean girl aesthetic, celebrities such as Hailey Bieber have been leading the charge on clear, clean, glowing skin. As much as they would like us to believe that their results are due to their skincare lines, we know the truth. Those results come from clinic treatments such as microneedling.
Beauty Professional UK revealed that microneedling was the second most searched-for beauty term of 2024. With the end of year industry projections combined with those staggering search results, microneedling (sometimes called skin needling) is set to be the biggest beauty treatment of 2025.
If you haven’t heard the term already 1000 times from your clients, we’re here to tell you everything you need to know.
What is it?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses many tiny needles to kickstart the skin’s natural healing process. A handpiece equipped with the tiny needles creates microscopic punctures in the skin. The microtrauma stimulates collagen and elastin production as part of the skin’s healing process and these proteins work in overdrive to heal the skin barrier, keeping the skin firm and smooth once healed.
What concerns can it treat?
The popularity of microneedling might be due to the large number of skin concerns it can provide answers to. Fine lines, acne scarring, stretch marks, pigmentation and even hair loss can be improved with this incredible treatment.
How do you do it?
A trained provider of aesthetician will apply numbing cream to the face and then gently sweep the tool all over the area (it can be used from head to toe – it’s that much of an all-rounder). This can take anywhere between 10-30 minutes. Some bleeding and discomfort are to be expected.
Why should clients come to you?
The very nature of causing trauma to the skin barrier should be carried out by a trained professional, at-home treatments can be dangerous as it is more difficult to control the pressure applied.
Another fabulous benefit of an in-clinic microneedling treatment is the combination of microneedling and PRP, another massively popular treatment, which makes both more efficacious. In-office treatments will also be using sharper needles than clients can typically get for at home use.
How long will it take to see results?
The results will be fairly immediate. From Microneedling alone, your client’s skin should be plump, pink, and luminous for a couple of weeks. On a short-term basis, the skin will look more radiant from the inflammation. Microneedling really comes into its own during the healing process, and thus takes a few sessions to see drastic results.
Are there risks?
You can definitely overdo it with microneedling. Too-frequent treatment sessions can lead to broken capillaries and decrease the overall radiance of the skin, so best to have one session every four weeks. The amazing results can be achieved when the skin has time to fully recover between sessions.
Skincare technology has been revolutionised in the last few years, in the case of microneedling, we have seen the rise of Radiofrequency microneedling which offers more effective, permanent results.

What is RF Microneedling?
Like traditional Microneedling, RF microneedling uses a handpiece equipped with hundreds of tiny needles, designed to create microtrauma to stimulate the skin’s healing process. However, the addition of radiofrequency technology heats the skin and helps to tighten and firm. The heat from the device also helps to remodel collagen, and the depth of the needles promotes elastin cells to regenerate, smoothen, and tighten.
What is the difference?
As a general rule, RF microneedling is a more intense treatment that targets more severe skin concerns. Microneedling is good for improving overall skin texture whereas RF microneedling is best for tackling deeper wrinkles, more severe acne scars or serious loss in skin laxity.
RF microneedling might require 1-2 days of downtime, and microneedling generally needs no downtime at all. RF microneedling is generally safer for all skin types.
